The OpenCaching NA Diversifed Cacher Contest

Coming in August! Lots of great prizes!

Open Caching Logo V2BTo celebrate our 4th anniversary (Aug. 18) and the month of International Geocaching Day (Aug. 23), we will be running a contest for the entire month of August, which encourages people to use alternative Geocaching websites (Us and the OpenCaching Network, Terracaching.com, GPSgames.org, Geocaching Australia and Navicache.com), as well as the smartphone based GPS games Munzee, Sighter and Monster Cache. This contest is inspired by two similar “non-official” contests run in the past by one of our admins, NativTXN, as well as a local “alternative to the frog” contest run by Termite Hunter during May and June 2014 at the Greater Charlotte Geocaching Club website. Prizes include a brand new in the box GPS unit from Terracaching.com, multiple premium memberships and multiple “virtual packages” from Munzee.com, a Sighter T-Shirt, Cache me if you can Geocaching board game, Monster coins from Monster Cache, and much, much more! Need details? Have questions? Read on.

HikerJamz launches new show: After-Cache

jamzOur old friend, and “guest blogger” to this blog, HikerJamz has launched a second weekly show! That would be After-Cache, which is a pre-recorded show, and generally released on Sundays, on Spreaker.com. The first show was released on  Sunday, June 21st, and the 2nd show is up on the website right now! Best to go right to the source, correct? Here is an explanation of the show, and how it works, quoted  from HikerJamz himself:

“Hikerjamz After-Cache Radio Show is a new podcast show that I have just released 6/22/14 on Spreaker.com. Different than Blog talk radio show, this one will not have an option for live callers. The show is all pre-recorded from my Audacity program and uploaded to the studio on Spreaker.com and will run for 45 minutes every Sunday around noon, and will be available to listen soon after. The first episode explains how it works. You can e-mail me at radiotalkshow2013@gmail.com and tell your story or adventure of your favorite caching experience of the week or weekend, and I will read it on the air; or you can go to speakpipe.com/hikerjamz and record a voice message to be played on the air. There is only a 90 second recording time so if you need more time, just send what you have and record again to continue your story. I need to have the e-mail or recording by 10 pm. Friday night eastern (New York) time so I can have it ready to go on Sunday. If you miss the time, it will go on the next weeks show. This is a family friendly radio show so let your children participate also. They enjoy geocaching, so I want to include them in this as well and I’m sure they would have some exciting adventures to share! So check it out by listening to my first episode here www.spreaker.com/user/hikerjamz and join in on the fun! My Blog Talk Radio Show will still continue, but I dropped it down to 45 minutes instead of 1 hour.”

So please do check this show out! You can contribute via a “voicemail”, or via email. The OCNA blogger himself made a contribution via email to episode 2 (near the end). And remember, the “original” HikerJamz show is not going anywhere, it has just been cut down to 45 minutes from an hour. And of course you can check out the archived episodes of that show right here on this blog, as always.

Geocaching, with The Doc on the side

doclogo

A funny thing happened, on or before June 12th, 2014, when we went to post a Geocaching Doc video on this blog. We found we could no longer copy and paste a description of a YouTube video! We were using Firefox, so no problem, lets try Chrome. Nope, didn’t work there either. Internet Explorer, same thing. We’re sure Google has their reasons, but it is a fact you can no longer copy and paste the description, or “about” a certain video, as they call it, on YouTube.

So not to be deterred, and inspired by another Geocaching blog, which posts the latest video of another Geocaching Vlogger to their blog, we threw The Geocaching Doc’s latest video up on the sidebar of this blog via a WordPress Widget. Works like a charm, and when his latest video came out on his RSS feed, it updated to the newest one, replacing the previous one, just fine.

So we’re moving the Geocaching Doc to the side! The sidebar, that is, on the right hand side of this blog. Whenever he posts a new video to YouTube, it will immediately show up on the sidebar of this blog, via an RSS feed. Underneath the little thumbnail image on the sidebar, will be the Title of the video. When you click on said thumbnail image, the video will open in a large lightbox window  in the middle of this webpage. In other words, the whole webpage will be dimmed out, and you will see the video full sized in the middle of your screen.

We’re sure just about everyone has seen the so called “lightbox technique” all over the internet, and many just didn’t know what it was called. Now you know, and we’ll even give you the link to the wikipedia page on the subject, for further reading! We have discussed moving to the side with The Doc, and he’s OK with it. We too are OK with it, and feel it might even help this blog to load faster! A win-win all the way around. So you can, as you have for almost a year, see the latest from The Geocaching Doc right here on this blog!

OpenCaching NA Admins interviewed on GeoGearHeads Podcast

customLogo.gifOur OpenCaching North America Admins Dudley Grunt and NativTxn were interviewed on GeoGearHeads episode 125, recorded live on May 22nd, 2014, and the archived show was released on their website on May 24th, 2014. You can listen below in the embedded audio player, and below that is the live video session from YouTube. GeoGearHeads is a near weekly feature with The Bad Cop and DarrylW4 discussing topics of interest to Geocachers, Location-based Gamers, and Technology Enthusiasts. They record the shows live through Google+ Hangout On Air Thursday nights at 9:10PM Eastern/6:10PM Pacific (The upcoming shows are listed on the Google+ GeoGearHeads page). You can subscribe to the audio version through iTunes, RSS, or Stitcher, watch the shows on YouTube, and check them out on FaceBook, Google+, and Twitter. This is also a rare episode in that The Bad Cop (Washington), and DarrylW4 (Michigan) were able to get together for GeoWoodstock, and record the show together live. As with most guests on GGH, Dudley Grunt and NativeTxn appear via webcam, should you like to check out the video session. And (blatant plug) should you, note that Dudley Grunt is donning a sporty OpenCachingNA T-shirt, available at our Swag Store at Spreadshirt.com. And all T-Shirts at Spreadshirt.com are 15% off until June 10th, 2014. 🙂
