Hello world!

Hey, this WordPress thing works! Hello world! is the default first post to any WordPress blog, so let’s roll with it. Please bear with us, as we migrate our blog from the Blogger platform (boo!) to the WordPress platform (yea!). You can still reach our original 14 month old blog at http://opencachingna.blogspot.com. Since this page is obviously live, if you check back here in the next few days to a week, you will see this blog in various stages of template and widget tweaking, and old blog importation.

The HikerJamz Geocaching Talk Show: May 11th, 2014

Discover Podcasting Internet Radio with hikerjamz Geocaching Talk Show on BlogTalkRadio

Notes: Due to a major problem in Studio 1 during the live show on Saturday, May 10th, this is an edited show posted Sunday May 11th. It is considered episode 60.5 of the show, and is about 35 minutes long.

After this post, there will be no posts to this blog for a period expected to be “a couple weeks”. In our one year anniversary post, we threatened to move from the Blogger.com blogging platform to WordPress, and we’re going to pull the trigger on that. At some point during that period, this blog will only be reachable at http://opencachingna.blogspot.com and https://blog.opencaching.us won’t work. We will announce that change at all our social media outlets. However, the wordpress blog will return at blog.opencaching.us.

Hikerjamz Geocaching Talk Show is a proud member of the Tech Podcasts Network. We have a new episode every Saturday at 3:00 pm. Eastern (New York) time here on Blog Talk Radio. An interview with Geocaching Vlogger The Ginger Geocacher

Our old friend HikerJamz alerted us last week to a relatively new face on the Geocaching scene who might be interested in being interviewed for this blog; Amber, who goes by the handle The Ginger Geocacher. We quickly contacted her, and yes, she was happy to agree to an interview with us. She joined Geocaching.com in early January, where her username is thegingergeoacher (all one word). She is also on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and of course has her own YouTube channel. Above, you see embedded what is, at the time of this post, her latest video, “It happens to the best of us Geocaching”, when she went out Geocaching on the Birthday of the hobby (May 3rd). We are also embedding another one of her videos at the bottom of the post. On with the interview!

Geocaching (NOT) taking a beating in from Government Officials in North Carolina (part 3 of 3) guest commentary by DeBaere

Courtesy of Julian March/Star News Media www.StarNewsOnline.com

Above is Lodge Road on The Holly Shelter Game Land, about 15 miles NNE of Wilmington, North Carolina. There are about 600 Geocaching.com listed caches on The HSGL, The Bling Shelter Power Run (link to first cache in the series), which is generally considered a roadside power trail (over half of them on the road above). Game Lands are used primarily for hunting of course, and are administered by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commision. On April 19th, an article came out in the Jacksonville Daily News alleging that “Geocaching draws the scrutiny of state officials” for caching on that State gamelands, as found here on the web. Not really a bad article, and a founding member and current board member of the North Carolina Geocaching Organization was interviewed. But one cannot deny the negative connotations of the attention grabbing headline! Geocaching is under scrutiny? Why? Who told the reporter that? We noticed commentary on this article by well known North Carolina based Geocacher DeBaere (Dave DeBaeremaeker) on Google+, and asked if he would let us post it here as “guest commentary”, to which he graciously agreed. Read the article first of course, and then his excellent opinion piece below.
