How To Puzzle Cache is a new book (officially released December 13th, 2014) by a Geocacher named Cully Long, AKA childofatom on Geocaching.com. You can click the banner above to go to the website he has created for this 302 page book for more information, including sample pages and ordering information. We at OCNA first heard from Cully in way back in November, 2012, when he was looking for some information about our listing site to include in the appendix for the book. We asked him if he would like to be interviewed by our blog, and even fast track it before the end of 2014. He was happy to sit down and answer some questions for us.

HikerJamz archives; Josh & Liz from the Peanuts or Pretzels blog

There is no HikerJamz After-Cache show this week. We received an an email from James stating that he’s still a wee bit busy with unpacking and set up after the relocation from SW Ohio to Naples, Florida. So we dug into our HikerJamz archives, and found one of his more popular shows from the Blog Talk Radio era; an hour long show from February 2014, where Josh & Liz from the Peanuts or Pretzels blog call in to talk with James and Ken. Remember that guy? 🙂

Has Geocaching finally peaked, and on the decline?

graph

That depends on how you define “on the decline”.  If it were defined as the number of new caches created by year, we’re afraid the answer is yes. Here you see a bar graph of caches created by year on our website. Note that caches created doesn’t necessarily mean all of them were published, but 98%+ of them were. Keep in mind our site was launched in mid-August 2010, so there was quite a bit of interest in the new website to have 527 caches created in just 4 1/2 months. Then we had a somewhat unexplained decline in 2011, and we peaked in 2012. You can see where the numbers have gone from there. It’s not just us though. With 3 weeks left in 2014, new caches hidden in The United States in 2014 are down 23% from their 2013 levels on Geocaching.com, as well as being down in most Countries in the world that are considered traditional hotbeds of Geocaching activity. However, there are a few Countries that are exceptions to this overall decline in caches hidden, and there is some good news regarding the number of new Geocachers, and the overall number of caches being found.

HikerJamz After-Cache: Episode 24

[spreaker type=standard width=500px autoplay=false episode_id=5328965]

This is HikerJamz/CrazyCritter1966’s first show from Naples, Florida, after relocating from SW Ohio! As many of you regular listeners know, HikerJamz recently retired after 47 years of working at various places. He tells us “Right now I’m enjoying the warm weather and can’t wait till we are really settled in to start geocaching again. In other words, I haven’t found my GPS yet! It’s in one of the boxes. Kinda like a puzzle cache. Figure it out and you find it.” Well, Good luck with that, James, enjoy yourself down there, and keep the shows coming!
